Abstract
Purpose: International prostate symptom score(IPSS) presents subjective degree of symptoms. We investigate to the relationships among IPSS, age, maximal urinary flow rate, prostate volume, prostate specific antigen, residual volume.

Materials and Methods: From 1986 to 2003, we perform transrectal biopy for patients with low urinary tract symptoms, because they had increased prostate specific antigen and abnormal transrectal ultrasonography finding. There was 110 men whose pathologic finding was benign prostatic hyperplasia. They were stratified by 3 IPSS groups and we calculated age, maximal urinary flow rate, total prostate volume, transitional zone volume, prostate specific antigen, residual volume. We evaluated relationships among the parameters according to these groups.

Results: According to the IPSS, there were significant relashionship with age(p£¼0.05) and maximal flow rate (p£¼0.05). But, there were no significant relationship with total prostate volume(p£¾0.05), transitional zone volume (p£¾0.05), prostate specific antigen(p£¾005), residual volume(p£¾0.05).

Conclusions: Emerging from this analysis showed that age and maximal urinary flow rate is the important factor influencing IPSS. Age and maximal urinary flow rate were parameters presenting objectively degree of symptoms. Total prostate volume, transitional zone volume, prostate specific antigen and residual volume were not objective parameters to present benign prostate hyperplasia symptoms.
